Abseiling (Off-site)

Scare yourself into learning new skills with an abseiling session! No longer seen as merely part of a day's climbing, abseiling can be used as an activity in its own right and is flexible enough to cover a range of ages and abilities. The activity offers immense rewards in return for pushing personal limits. Successful completion of this activity requires participants to take responsibility, plan ahead, commit to a goal and communicate within a team.

Abseiling sessions at Carlton Lodge can be tailored to cover elements of the National Curriculum for Geography, PE, Science and PSHE at Key Stages 2-4.

Bouldering (Off-site)

Bouldering (or ‘weaseling’) is a hugely fun activity that is basically a more accessible form of climbing or scrambling.

At Carlton Lodge this is a high-energy, off-site activity that allows participants to push themselves physically and mentally and to explore the stunning surroundings of our bouldering site in the Yorkshire Dales.

Bouldering groups are required to work together, with a strong focus on planning, communication and creative thinking.

Sessions can be tailored to cover elements of the National Curriculum for Geography, Science and PSHE at key stages 2-4.

Bushcraft

Our bushcraft activities are a great way to learn about the wild environment, elements of survival and how to live and work with nature.

Sessions cover shelter-building, wild foods, even making jewellery out of nettles! And of course, we haven't forgotten everyone's favourite - how to start a fire with just a couple of sticks.

There's even a 'Plane Crash!' scenario to test your new skills and see how good you are at planning, teamwork and communication.

Sessions can be tailored to cover elements of the National Curriculum for Geography, Science, Citizenship and PSHE at key stages 2-4.

Participants of all abilities can join in – canoeing is great for general fitness and coordination and the group-based activities rely heavily on communication and teamwork.

Dry Stone Walling

New for 2015 season.

The countryside skill of Dry Stonewalling is a new activity that we have been developing over the past few months and can now be included in your programme of Adventurous activities.

Participants will learn how dry stone walls are constructed and learn the techniques required to build something which can last for hundreds of years. The activity involves choosing the right stone, preparing it (dressing) and then building with it. All under the expert eye of our Dry Stone Waller Master Builders.

The best part being that the walls you build will become part of the Carlton Lodge site and will hopefully be there for many years to come,

Our first group to take part was the Upper Wharfedale Cluster of Primary Schools (Grassington, Burnsall, Cracoe, Kettlewell, Threshfield and The Boyle and Petit) Our Master Dry Stonewallers, Keith Ledger and Scott Winship, instructed 4 Groups of 12 children during 1 ½ hour sessions. The children all became very engaged during the sessions, learned new skills and developed their team working and communication skill. They can rightly be proud of their achievements.

If you are interested in doing this activity or wanting to know more contact Mark Faulkner, Head of Carlton Lodge Activity Centre.
